There are many benefits that would result from paving the Luce Line State Trail from Winsted to Cedar Mills.
• The project would provide a benefit for both metro and greater Minnesota communities. The trail section will greatly assist small town business development and allow the region to showcase its amenities and community events. In addition, the project would serve as a needed trail enhancement for recreational trail users.
• Trails offer safer alternate routes for exercise and commuting.
• The existing quality and condition of the trail in the project area deters users from using the trail from Winsted to Cedar Mills. Due to the existing condition of the trail, recreational users often use Minnesota Highway 7 as an alternative resource.
• Visiting state parks and trails is one of the top five activities for tourists in Minnesota, contributing over $200 million in economic activity.
• By facilitating increased physical activity, trails are part of the solution to promoting healthier lifestyles for adults, children, and families.
• Trails are a valuable means to connect users with nature and the environment.
• The plan creates more opportunities for “trail connectivity” and use between communities.
• Paving the trail is consistent with the Minnesota DNR’s “Master Plan” for the Luce Line State Trail.
• Paving this portion of the trail will make it “kid & wheelchair friendly” and a favorite for little legs and wheelchairs.
• With bountiful farmland and natural settings galore, the trail would be safer for the many recreational users looking for a relaxing nature experience.
• The existing conditions of the trail are not suitable for a state trail that connects major Minnesota cities.
