Today’s Trail

The Luce Line State Trail stretches 63 miles from the western metro suburb of Plymouth to the small town of Cosmos in west-central Minnesota. The trail runs on a former railroad line and is available for biking, hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, snowmobiling, and skiing. From Plymouth west about 30 miles to Winsted, the surface is limestone. There is also a parallel tread way for horseback riding. Snowmobiles are allowed on the trail west of Stubb’s Bay Road.

West of Winsted, the trail is made up of crushed gravel, which makes it difficult for the trail to be used by different groups. Over the last several years, our communities have invested time and money in making the Luce Line State Trail a resource that all of our citizens can enjoy. Hutchinson has been a leader in developing trails and integrating the Luce Line State Trail in its planning processes. Even our smaller communities like Winsted and Silver Lake have now created trail plans and have finished trail and sidewalk projects for its residents. Meanwhile, McLeod County has provided support and leadership in bringing everyone together in an attempt to accomplish regional projects.
